Think about how often in your life someone has asked you about your background. People often try to make sense of features that others have. This is because cultural heritage plays a huge role in how one lives their life. What better way to get to know a person than by asking them their background?
Cultural Heritage is an essential part of one’s identity. It can be how one comes to understand themselves and their purpose. Cultural heritage is passed on through generations. Ancestory.com can show me the regions of my DNA. However, that cannot teach me to live like my ancestors. I often wonder, would it help me understand who I am if I lived like my ancestors? I often wonder what my true roots are. How much different would I be if I knew? Would my ancestors be proud of who I am? Would they think my purpose is fulfilled?
These thoughts often provoke a lengthy google search engine storm. I grow more curious with every click and began to compare my features to various Indigenous peoples. Eventually, leaving me even more puzzled. My questions are left unanswered, and I stare at myself in the mirror. I analyze all my asymmetrical features that do not seem to belong to one group.
Culture is Beauty
Not knowing myself allows me to keep an open mind. I continue to read and learn more about culture, inquiring about the world around me.
For those who know and understand their heritage, it’s a beautiful thing. For those of us who don’t know our heritage, It is still a beautiful thing.

Beauty is asymmetric,
I embrace my asymmetry
my ancestors showed through me.
Not knowing myself
I’m not as connected as one should be.
As I Look at the land, the sky, the sea
puzzled I am.
I shall not question what I see.
