Cataracts
Imagine seeing life through a foggy lens. Think of all the normal activities that would become a challenge, watching TV, texting, reading words on a page, chopping vegetables while cooking, etc. A Cataract is the clouding of the lens in the eye. Although it happens gradually as a person ages, it severely disrupts the quality of life. A Cataract causes blurry vision, a glare in the visual field, double vision, and the inability to see at night. Many older adults develop cataracts over time which decreases functionality and is detrimental to their health. For this group of people, cataract surgery is revolutionary.
Cataract surgery is the removal of the cloudy lens of the eye, it’s then replaced with an artificial lens. This restores clear vision for the older adult. Patients glow in excitement, expressing what cataract surgery means to them. Restoring their vision means they can see all of the fine lines, shapes and colors once again. There by allowing them to prepare food for themselves, and watch TV in full HD. Surgery means that they are able to read books, complete puzzles, and play chess. The older adult will have the ability to preform all of the tasks that they could not when their vision was cloudy.
The anticipation alone brings patients to tears. They express nothing but gratitude toward the medical staff.
