A widespread debate among nursing TikTok emerged at the beginning of this month. A viral video of a non-healthcare worker, who goes by the name Selena, claimed that nurses were leaving the profession because they only joined for the money and Nurse aesthetic. A nurse influencer, who goes by the name Nurse Morgan, replied that she could not make a fair assessment when she worked at Circle K. Allegedly, Nurse Morgan caused Selena to lose her job. This post will explore plausible reasons for the nursing shortage.
Why do people become nurses?
Most people enter the profession of choice with a reason. This is their “why.” When you have a why, it gives you a purpose. When I was in Nursing school, our professors asked us why we chose nursing. The Answers would vary. Many students would respond by saying they come from a family of nurses, doctors, or other healthcare personnel. Another answer was that they had a positive experience with healthcare. I also frequently heard that they are passionate about children or helping others.
Why are nurses leaving?
Now that I work and talk to other nurses, I have been told COVID-19 is responsible for much of the older generation leaving the bedside. The older generation made up much of the staff. Another reason nurses are going is because of burnout from long hours, toxic work environments, and high patient ratios. Other reasons nurses are leaving include lack of fulfillment and money.
Nursing for money.
Selena argued that nurses do the job for a check. Most people research how much money they will make before entering their career of choice. So, while many feel nurses don’t make enough money, money is usually not the only reason people leave the profession. Nurses will never get paid for how they make an impact on the lives of patients.
Nursing for the Aesthetic.
Modern Nursing has changed the aesthetic of nurses. Nursing has evolved, moving away from white skirts and hats. In the 80s, nurses began wearing scrubs in specialized areas due to bodily fluids. So, while nurses look clean and flattering nurses are working hard. In any case, workers should take pride in how they dress during work.
Who can talk about the Nursing profession?
Nurse Morgan invalidated Selina’s opinion because she does not work in the profession. However, we are all entitled to our opinions, and everyone has the right to share. Speaking with facts is wiser than allowing ignorance to lead to a statement.
Ultimately, NO ONE should lose their job because of a debate on TikTok, but we are moving into a different era. Read your company policies and choose your battles wisely.
