If you know the impact quality friends have in your life, you’re likely aware of the detrimental effect of losing a friend.
Have you ever lost a friendship that was essential to your life? The loss of a good friend is comparable to that of a significant other. When you lose a close friend, it is normal to grieve. It will take a while before you adjust to the vacancy.
Grief will include going through the files of happy moments, sad moments, and every moment in between. You replay scenarios, wondering what you could have done to improve things. It can feel as though you are about to drive yourself crazy. Sometimes there’s nothing you could have done.
What can you do? Allow yourself time to feel each emotion and process emotions, but remember the goal is to let go! Try not to take the blame. Focus on your needs and healing from the situation. Be mindful, and be patient. Healing is different for everyone, and healing is not linear! That means you will feel like you are moving backward. Be patient With yourself!
Poem
The circle of life mimics the cycle of friendships
in the way that people come and go
Life is beautiful flowers in a vase
elegant poise
as it shrivels, shrinks, and withers.
Petals fall like teardrops
when gravity pulls them to the ground
But the tears never blur the memories of our friends,
much like petals never thoroughly coat the path we walk over
and the beauty of each never dies.
Instead of forgetting, we replant seeds in fruitful soil
so that their souls replenish and rise again in
someone else to live the day-to-day with us
someone else to survive our ordinary
This time we choose perennials
instead of seasonals
although annuals are so beautiful
even after they fall apart.
