Several years ago, Smokey Robinson won the Lifetime Achievement award at the BET awards. During his speech, he emphasized the impact of quality friends. “A friend is a commodity.” A true friend is dependable, reliable, and holds you accountable. Friendships require balance and understanding. As with any relationship, they have ups and downs. Friends do not always tell you what you want to hear, but they’ll tell you the truth. They will bring out the better you, and they will challenge you. A quality friend will not leave you feeling defeated but will elevate you.
Friends begin as complete strangers. We meet on our journey and become closer than family. The more people come and go, the more I am grateful for the consistency of a quality friend.

Alicia’s Poem
Everyone should have a best friend
Knowing you before and after
every other relationship ends
They will keep your secrets clutched tight in their hands till it turns to dust.
Somehow you both built up enough trust
To bridge the gap between your world and theirs
Two souls crossing over every night frantically whispering about each other’s affairs
You feel at ease
When you hear the sound of their voice in the breeze
With it comes the calm to halt all your anxiety
For a moment
They are often keen to your vices
Knowing the things that you keep hidden underneath your shallow creek
They have the coordinates to the skeletons you tried to bury deep
With a real view of the real you
There’s no frosted glass between you two
Just a two way mirror
Reflecting back on the true colors,
Two colors
One for me and one for you
I hope you knew
That you will always be my best friend
Until all the days are through
